Metal Insider’s top 5: bands that got heavier as they went on

3) Chimaira

When Chimaira released their first material, the This Present Darkness EP and Pass Out of Existence LP, they were little more than a glorified nu-metal band, comparable to Mudvayne and Slipknot at the time. The Impossibility of Reason began the transition for them into a full-on metal band, a position they secured on their self-titled album and Resurrection. Their last three albums have only gotten heavier and more groove-laden, even dabbling in sludge and death metal at times. Without a doubt, Chimaira keeps their promises about each album being heavier than the last!
