4) Dream Theater

Dream Theater has had an interesting career trajectory. Their sophomore album Images and Words gave them “Pull Me Under,” which the prog rock quintet refers to as their “greatest hit.” Since then, they’ve wavered between heavy, proggy, instrument-heavy ragers and ballads. In fact, even the aforementioned greatest hits album had a disc of heavy stuff and a disc of ballads. And there’s still some softer passages on the band’s most recent album, their self-titled one, some of it is among the heaviest they’ve written. The Grammy-nominated “The Enemy Inside” is a good example, and the band’s obviously been listening to some of the heavier progressive bands that were inspired by them.
