Deep Purple’s evolution from a psychedelic folk band to the then-new genre of metal reached its apex in 1972, when Machine Head was released. The late great Jon Lord commanded the Hammond B3 organ like it was a guitar, distorting it and soloing alongside Ritchie Blackmore. In fact, Lord actually made the organ cool, albeit temporarily. Any stoner rock band you hear with an organ owes something to Lord, and it’s on no better display than the album’s opener.
