It’s not that often when metal creeps its way into mainstream pop culture. So when metal/hard rock acts do actually pop up in beloved sitcoms, dramatic films, cartoons or even reality series, it’s kind of awesome. So in the weekly column Remember When, Metal Insider recalls the most random instances of metal’s elite appearing in front of the camera.
You never really know what to expect from a Marilyn Manson show. However, the shock rocker has become even more unpredictable this summer while on tour with Slipknot. Some nights Manson appears fine and in true form, while many other nights comes off as… well, not in the best shape, to put it mildly. Yet no matter how often he comes off as incoherent on stage, he’ll never look as weird as he did on HBO’s Eastbound And Down.
Granted, Manson has made plenty of appearances in both movies and TV shows (his recurring role as a white supremacist on Sons Of Anarchy was actually a major highlight of the show’s final season). Meanwhile, this cameo is extremely brief, but finds a barely recognizable Manson wearing yellow shorts and roller skates just trying to be a good waiter (easier said than done when the patron is Danny McBride’s Kenny Powers, as it turns out). So that alone makes this mandatory viewing for Manson diehards. Yet the only thing more bizarre than his appearance in Eastbound And Down is the fact that Manson is actually a huge fan of the HBO comedy about a washed up baseball player.
“Yeah, Marilyn Manson, he’s f—ing obsessed with the show,” the show’s co-director David Gordon Green revealed years before Manson’s cameo in 2013. “He goes so far as to dress up like Kenny.” Not only was Manson a big enough fan to creepily dress up like McBride’s beloved character, but had also been campaigning for years to play the role of Powers’ awkward sidekick Stevie Janowski (who was played by actor Steve Little). Obviously, Manson had to settle for a few seconds of airtime with Kenny Powers, and an awkward wig, instead.
So take a break from watching video of Manson trying not to “fall onto my dick with that cord,” and relive Manson’s dream of appearing on Eastbound And Down come true below.
