Tommy Lee to play drums on the new Smashing Pumpkins album

tommy lee and billy corgan smashing pumpkinsThough Mötley Crüe still has more touring to do before bidding farewell, it looks like Tommy Lee has already landed a studio gig. More surprisingly, though, is that the gig is with the Smashing Pumpkins.

Billy Corgan revealed on the band’s website that Tommy Lee will play drums on all nine tracks of the Smashing Pumpkins’ new album Monuments To An Elegy, tentatively due out in 2015. “Just finished round 1 of tracking drums with Tommy Lee for the new the Smashing Pumpkins album,” Corgan revealed in the post. “Shockla-locka-boom. Yes, that T Lee for all 9 songs of Monument To An Elegy.” In case you still don’t believe it (which is quite understandable), Corgan also included the above picture of him and the Mötley Crüe drummer in the studio together.

It’s unclear whether current drummer Mike Byrne is still in the Smashing Pumpkins, or if Lee is also involved with the band’s second album Day For Night (also due out in 2015). Though all of this raises an even bigger question: how the hell did the Smashing Pumpkins get involved with Tommy Lee to begin with? Then again, Lee has done his fair share of odd collaborations in the past (remember Methods Of Mayhem? That first album alone had some weird guest appearances). Hell, he did just record a song with Courtney Love (yup, he played on her new song “You Know My Name” as well!).
