It’s actually a bit surprising that more previously unheard recordings of Dimebag Darrell haven’t been “discovered” and released sooner. Such a trend has worked pretty well for the estates of Jimi Hendrix and Tupac Shakur. Granted, there was the metal/country project Rebel Meets Rebel with country legend David Allen Coe released in 2006, and his brother Vinnie Paul did allow Nickelback to use outtake solos in their Dime tribute song “Side Of A Bullet” (still trying to figure that one out). But it looks like another newly discovered recording will surface publicly soon.
This month, the U.K.’s Metal Hammer magazine will release a previously unheard track recorded by Dimebag. Dubbed as his “final recording”, the song was discovered by Darrell’s girlfriend Rita Haney and produced by Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo … wait what?! Seems a bit of a random producer choice, but that’s still interesting. Lombardo explained his the following to the magazine:
“I got the track and put it into Pro Tools and trimmed the edges and made it shine a bit but the true producer and engineer was Dime. The sounds you hear are the ones he recorded, I just cleaned it up. I’ve never done anything like this and it was an honor to work on something that no one has ever heard and to be one of the first to listen to it. [Dime’s former girlfriend] Rita [Haney] told me about the song, about Zakk [Wylde] and the whole the story about them getting together and ending up drunk. It’s really cool. Rita fills me in and all the stories are so great. They had such a nice life. I’ve come to know more about him and his impact later in life than I did at the time. You really appreciate his art and what he contributes to metal.”
So he doesn’t reveal much more details about the actual song. However, did he mean to infer that Zakk Wylde makes an appearance on this recording? If so, well then … AWESOME!! The song will be featured in this month’s edition of the U.K. magazine.
