“Rock is for everyone. Music is for everyone. Girls have the same ability as boys do.”
These wise words were spoken by Paulina Villarreal, one of three kids who are advanced far beyond what their age would lead you to think. Alejandra, Paulina and Daniela Villarreal are the three talented sisters who make up The Warning, an all-girl metal band from Monterrey, Mexico. For the past two years, these siblings have played together covering metal classics as well as writing their own music – and they’re pretty great at what they do.
The sisters started out jamming together for fun, but then realized quickly that they could actually take their band seriously. Practicing for a solid three hours every day has definitely paid off for these young ladies, as their musical skills are pretty top notch for being so young. “It’s always practicing first, and then homework,” explains Daniela to Buzzfeed News.
In this cover of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman”, 15 year old Daniela takes the lead on vocals while also handling guitar duties (and totally slaying the solo, might I add), all the while trading off vocals with middle child drummer Paulina and their pint-sized bassist, Alejandra. This cover has gotten them their recent viral recognition, with over 3 million Youtube views.
They cover a ton of familiar songs, many of them penned before any of these girls were born. On their cover of Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It”, Paulina takes on lead vocal duties while maintaining a near perfect job on the drums – which is something that many professional drummers can hardly handle. Alejandra gets her chance to shine in their cover of “Hysteria” by Muse, a song known for its awesome (and pretty complex) bassline. They even put a metal twist on a few recent Top 40 hits such as Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” and “Roar” by Katy Perry.
They have some original songs as well, and this week are dropping their EP, Escape The Mind, on iTunes. Here you can see them performing “Fade Away” from the album – another track where Paulina handles both lead vocals and drumming duties. This is on top of an already exciting week for The Warning, as they were signed to label/publisher Victoria Records over the weekend.
The Warning are currently running a GoFundMe campaign to raise $30,000 in order to enroll in a summer music program at Boston’s Berklee College of Music . In the 25 days the campaign has been active, they’ve already raised over $8k, including a donation from the president of Berklee College of Music himself.
These three ladies have a ton of talent and, with the commitment they clearly already have, are bound to do awesome things as musicians and to blaze the way for other young girls who may have aspirations in metal music.
