Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor and his collaborator Atticus Ross, having already won an Oscar for The Social Network and followed it up with the score for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, are again working with director David Fincher. Gone Girl, an adaptation of the Gillian Flynn novel, will be released next month, and over the weekend, the Nine Inch Nails frontman and his frequent collaborator have released a track from their score. Like the other two soundtracks, unless you’re a fan of Ghosts I-IV, it doesn’t have a ton to offer the typical Nine Inch Nails song. It is, however, ambient, dissonant and slightly disturbing. Fincher told the Wall Street Journal that he instructed Reznor and Fincher to write spa music for the feature while getting his back fixed:
I was listening to that calming, placating music and thought, we need to tap into this. The movie is about the facade of the good neighbor, the good Christian, the good wife. So the notion was to start with music that’s attempting to give you a hug.
After hearing this, it doesn’t sound like any kind of spa music from anywhere you’d want to get a massage at. It’s about as calming as your wife being abducted, which is what the novel is about.
Gone Girl will be released on October 3. The soundtrack will be out next Tuesday (30).
