Since their formation in 1984, GWAR has been of the most unique bands in metal. With the shocking and sudden death of frontman Dave Brockie last night, it’s important to remember the band’s impact not just on the metal scene, but beyond it. And although GWAR’s music was almost an afterthought to their theatrics and onstage antics, their band’s reach extended to popular culture and much of that was due to Brockie and his alter ego, Oderus Urungus. With Brockie the centerpiece of the band and the only original member, the future of the band is very much in question, and it’s way to early to speculate what happens next, but it’s an undeniable fact that the band’s legacy reached far beyond the limitations of their genre. With that in mind, here are some of the ways in which GWAR and Brockie impacted the world beyond metal.
GWAR in Mystery Date
Released in 1991, this Ethan Hawke-starring teen comedy didn’t do that well at the box office, but it did feature GWAR’s first movie appearance . They appeared at a club for a few scenes in the film playing “Horror of Yg.”
