Frontier

So this is a bit of a funny (if not confusing) nugget. It appears that there’s a legal battle going on between two record labels: Frontier Records and Frontiers Records. In case you couldn’t figure it out just by reading the names, Frontier want Frontiers to change its name. Well, it gets a little more specific than that; Frontier founder Lisa Fancher is also seeking $500,000 in damages. ›

Here’s a bit of background to make things a little less confusing: Frontier Records is a punk label in California responsible for putting out albums from Suicidal Tendencies, Circle Jerks, T.S.O.L. and many more. Frontiers Records is a label in Italy that mainly focuses on what we’ll call classic rock as a blanket term, but in recent years has found some success in putting out albums from the likes of Sammy Hagar, Warrant, Asia, Whitesnake, and other acts from the 80’s  you probably didn’t even know put out an album in a while. Last year’s Stryper album for the label, No More Hell to Pay, was a commercial success, debuting at #35 on the charts.

Frontiers apparently claims that there won’t be confusion between the two labels because they specialize in different genres. True, you don’t normally mention Circle Jerks and Whitesnake in the same sentence. It is kind of funny to think about how Frontier is a label that had its heyday during the 80’s while much of Frontiers’ roster is made up of bands that had their original heyday in the 80’s. But there should be no confusion between a dormant punk label from LA and a current Italian label that releases hair metal.
