Don Argott was in the right place at the right time. The documentarian, who filmed Pentagram’s film Last Days Here, was making a documentary about Lamb of God and their international fans. Of course, the story took a dramatic turn last year when frontman Randy Blythe was arrested on charges of manslaughter upon entering Prague. And while metal fans followed the trial, resulting around the death of a fan that stage dove at a 2010 concert, in real time via social media and websites like this one, the news and possible outcome was significant enough for some mainstream media to pay attention. Blythe’s trial, and subsequent acquittal, will serve as the centerpiece of As the Palaces Burn, which will premiere on November 20th at Amsterdam’s International Documentary Film Festival and receive a theatrical and home video release next year.
Even without the tragic death of Daniel Nosek, As the Palaces Burn would have been an interesting film. “It’s crazy,” Blythe says. “I get paid to fly around the world and scream.” The trailer shows several international fans talking about the band. Slash also pops up to say something or other. And while it might seem slightly exploitative to center a film around a fan’s death, the band’s genuine remorse and sadness over one of their fans’ death, not to mention the potential ramifications of how the trial could have played out make it a must-see for any fans of music.
