The AV Club’s Undercover series will probably forever be known to metalheads as where we got to see GWAR cover Kansas‘ “Carry on Wayward Son.” It’s kind of hard to up the ante of cramming GWAR in full costume into a tiny studio to cover a classic rock song, but they might have just done that. The Melvins recently covered Butthole Surfers’ “Graveyard,” and it’s amazing for several reasons. First of all, former Surfers’ bassist Jeff Pinkus is now playing with Melvins (as well as his new band Honky). But even more amazingly, instead of in a studio, the band set up in a park by an ice cream truck and gave away free ice cream for the whole performance. The sight of seeing a bunch Buzz Osbourne, who looks like he should be kept away from children at all times, yelling out “free ice cream!,” then walking to the truck as the band continues to play and throwing out ice cream to a crowd of kids that have never heard of Melvins or Butthole Surfers is one of the best things you’ll see today.
