Earlier this year, we became aware of Kansas City rapper Tech N9ne, who declared his love of rock by announcing he’d be working with Serj Tankian on a track for his 13th album, Something Else. He also had a wish list of other high-profile metal singers for the album. It turns out that this is a big week for him, as not only was his album, which features the Serj track, released, but he also popped up on Five Finger Death Punch’s new album, via a cover of LL Cool J’s “Mama Said Knock You Out”.
The N9ne single lends itself more to vocal artistry, and when Serj sings on the bridge and chorus, it could almost pass for a System song. the Five Finger Death Punch track is straight up FFDP musically with a few shots of Tech N9ne. While younger or more rock-leaning fans might never have heard the original, fans of LL might view the cover as blasphemy, but at least having an actual hip-hop artist on the track lends it a bit of credibility. The Tankian/Tech N9ne song dives into more of the storytelling and social commentary Tankian gravitates toward, making deeper statements than the Five Finger Death Punch’s fist-controlled collaboration.
Check out the Serj video above, now, before it gets pulled down. Or before it makes someone angry (go to 2:25 to see what we’re talking about). Watch the FFDP video below.
