Why should major label bands be the only ones who get love? Unsigned & Streamed is a column where we stream a song from an unsigned band we at Metal Insider really dig.
This week, we’re kicking the door down to bring you Swedish death metal act Deathening. Based in Gothenburg and Malmö, Deathening came together in 2007 as a collaboration between professional sound engineers/producers Pål Callmer and Arnold Lindberg. Though they had made names for themselves behind a mixing console – in fact, Lindberg has acted as a tour engineer for In Flames, The Haunted, Destruction and Europe – Callmer’s guitar skills and Lindberg’s drumming needed a place to shine. They recruited guitarist Niklas Fridh, bassist Par Hallgren and former Embraced vocalist Kalle Nimhagen to fill out the quartet, releasing debut Open Up and Swallow in 2011. Deathening has returned now to release its follow-up, Chained in Blood, through the band’s own Rakamarow imprint. The band reached back into times of Swedish death legend to recruit Orvar Saftstrom (Entombed, Nirvana 2002) for his first vocal performance since 1991; he guests on the grinding, thrashing, sickening new single “The Living Burn,” which you can listen to below.

The video for opening track “Self Impaled” is streaming on Metal Injection now, and “Terminal Retribution” is up on the band’s Facebook page. Both “Self Impaled” and “The Living Burn” will be available on iTunes May 1st. More information on the band can also be found on its website.
