When you think of the music that would accompany killing Osama bin Laden, you’d probably think it would be something gung-ho, like Godsmack, or maybe Metallica. In fact, Metallica had been used to help Navy Seals interrogate prisoners, but asked them to stop. In a fascinating interview in Esquire, the man that shot bin Laden says that an unlikely band stepped forth to offer their music and support – Christian metal band Demon Hunter.
“When we first started the war in Iraq, we were using Metallica music to soften people up before we interrogated them,” the Shooter says. “Metallica got wind of this and they said, ‘Hey, please don’t use our music because we don’t want to promote violence.’ I thought, Dude, you have an album called Kill ‘Em All. But we stopped using their music, and then a band called Demon Hunter got in touch and said, ‘We’re all about promoting what you do.’ They sent us CDs and patches. I wore my Demon Hunter patch on every mission. I wore it when I blasted bin Laden.”
Wow, just wow. It’s pretty awesome to consider that a band as relatively unknown as Demon Hunter would get such a high-profile shoutout, and that when the demonic Osama bin Laden was hunted down, his life was ended by someone wearing a Demon Hunter patch. It’s also ironic that Metallica, whose pro-war song “Don’t Tread On Me” is an anthem, and as the shooter pointed out, have an album called Kill ’em All, didn’t want their music used by the military. At any rate, the article is a pretty great read, and sadly touches on how the shooter, an American hero, has been left with nothing, since he declined to stay with the Seals for 20 years, leaving after 16 years. Check out Demon Hunter’s “My Destiny” after the jump, and catch the band on tour now.
