There’s been so much drama and rumors surrounding Dream Theater’s vacant seat behind the drum kit that fans just want to know who will be Mike Portnoy’s replacement already. Unfortunately, though Dream Theater has made it clear that they have found a new drummer, no confirmation as to who it is has been announced. However, we can at least add another name to the list of rumored replacements thanks to That Metal Show co-host/radio show host Eddie Trunk.

In a series of postings via Twitter, Trunk revealed that Mike Mangini is Dream Theater’s new drummer. In addition to previously playing with Annihilator, Steve Vai, and Extreme, Mangini is famous for breaking multiple World’s Fastest Drummer records. He currently holds the title for three records, including  the Fastest Matched grip (at 1,247 strokes in 60 seconds), Fastest Hands (executing 1,203 single-stroke notes in 60 seconds without drumsticks mallets etc.), and  Fastest Traditional Grip (executing 1,126 strokes in 60 seconds). In addition to performing, Mangini currently teaches at the Berklee College Of Music in Boston.

It should be restated that this is still unconfirmed, but seeing that Mangini has also worked with DT singer James LaBrie before, this wouldn’t be too far of a stretch to imagine. For now, though, take this news with a grain of salt. Hopefully an official announcement regarding Dream Theater’s new drummer will come soon. In case you’re interested, you can check out Mangini in action above (performing a drum solo during a show with Steve Vai).
