Death metal band Abysmal Dawn have released a cover of legendary doom metal band Candlemass’ song “Bewitched.”
According to an interview with New Noise Magazine, frontman Charles Elliot said the track was recorded during the sessions for their latest album, Phylogenesis, but was not included on the finished release.
“We had some extra time in the studio, and we wanted to do something people weren’t expecting at all. No one expects me to do a lot of clean vocals or expects us to be influenced by a doom metal band with operatic vocals, but we definitely are. I think people were surprised, but we played it for a couple of people and they liked it, so we decided to go for it.”
The song, while available to stream, is also getting a limited edition physical release, albeit not as a stand alone piece. Issue #52 of New Noise Magazine, which features Abysmal Dawn on the cover, will include an exclusive flexi disc of the song. Those who subscribe to the magazine right now can still get their copy of the vinyl.
Abysmal Dawn released Phylogenesis on April 17. It is the band’s fifth studio album and first release on the Season of Mist label. The album also marks the first album appearance for drummer James Coppolino and guitarist Vito Petroni.
The band is set to host a Gimme Radio special today (5) at 3PM Eastern where they will be presenting a curated playlist and hanging out for a Q&A session. On June 9, the band will hold a Reddit AMA on the r/metal subreddit, where they will be fielding questions from fans.
