On Monday (29th), Deftones announced the lineup for their second annual Dia de los Deftones festival, which includes Deftones as the headliner followed by Chvrches, Gojira, and more. Hatebreed frontman Jamey Jasta noticed this lineup and didn’t seem too thrilled to see Chvrches listed as second on the bill and Gojira being the third act. While there have been tours and festivals supporting a diversified set of acts, Jasta wasn’t happy seeing the French metal giants perform before an electronic act.
Jasta has assured his reasons are more on the lines of how “metal needs to be shown more respect,” as this subject could possibly be part of the next episode of his podcast, The Jasta Show.
Jasta shared a series of Tweets on this subject. We collected a few and you can check them out below:
“Who is churches with a v and why the fuck are they playing over Gojira get tha fuuuuuck outtta here have you ever heard The Heaviest Matter In The Universe you’re gonna get embarrassed off the stage lol no offense. God the music industry suckkkkks sometimes.
Update: googled Churches w/ a v, they gotta be huge they did a song with a guy w/ a Marshmallow mask and people LOOOOOVE IT. Good for them.
I prefer loud amps in the face
I’m sure they’re lovely people and a popular group, I don’t agree with the line up order, same w/ other festivals, if anyone is butt hurt about my opinion wait til you hear the podcast! Metal needs to be shown more respect. Longer career, legacy, more albums, bill em higher
Bands that play their instruments > track acts. #Facts
While I’m at it, All That Remains played some small side stage at a fest this past weekend while bands with less hits and less albums who haven’t been around as long played mainstage, it’s not right.
Props to Chvrches booking agent though, that’s a gangster power move haha
Don’t get it twisted I’m all for diverse line ups but make the order right. Just supported Evanescance, Godsmack, KSE & Steel Panther 2 days ago
haha some folks don’t like facts &/or they twist what I say, whatever. Diverse lineups are great but whoever u are, if your agent power moves u above a crusher, good luck! I remember (band I wont name) somehow got to play after FFDP in AZ, it was a BAD lol. Hasn’t happened since.”
Chvrches vocalist Lauren Mayberry retweeted Jasta’s comment and responded with the following:
“Deftones curated the lineup so I don’t know how that speaks to problems with The Music Industry. I think it’s important and powerful that they promote the idea of a diverse community and try to bridge gaps instead of being guided by limiting, antiquated ideas about genre.
I saw Gojira in Glasgow years ago and have seen Deftones three times so was excited when we got asked to be on the bill. Just because someone plays or listens to “pop music” doesn’t mean they don’t understand or appreciate other things.”
