It’s rare that someone’s record career begins at age 62. It’s even rarer when their third album makes them famous at age 66. That’s the case for soul singer Charles Bradley, who died today at the age of 68 due to stomach cancer. While we don’t generally cover soul singers at Metal Insider, we’ve written about him before, due to his moving and emotional cover of Black Sabbath’s “Changes.” The title track of his third album which was released in April of 2016, Bradley’s soulful vocals make you feel every word he’s singing, and the horn-driven arrangement eclipses Sabbath’s. Accompanied by a video that’s just the singer expressing himself in a one-shot close-up of him, it shows you exactly where he’s been in his life without him saying a word.
