Alternative Press‘ music awards always seems to be a fun show, almost in spite of itself. It’s pretty much the only awards show aside from the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards that caters to people under the drinking age. Yet the magazine’s pop-punk and screamo dynamic does dictate that “legacy” artists like Korn, Every Time I Die and Sum 41 make it in there alongside nu-emo and whatever the hell Machine Gun Kelly is. It’s the same awards show that saw Korn and Asking Alexandria cover Duran Duran and Rob Halford join Babymetal for a pair of Judas Priest covers. So even thought it doesn’t really cater to metal all that much, there’s always a seat at the table for the genre.
The fourth Alternative Press Music Awards will be taking place on July 17th, and they’ve just announced the nominees. Be prepared to not know a lot of them, but there’s a solid showing of metal and hardcore alongside the parade of names you won’t know. Want to make your voice heard? Good luck going up against a bunch of 13 year olds with too much time on their hands, but you can pick your favorites here.
