On a cold windy night in the Motor City, fans lined up for blocks around the soon-to-be-replaced Joe Louis Arena, for a sold out show headlined by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Currently on their Getaway World Tour, the February 2 Detroit, Michigan show was their 11th stop in a 51 city trek.

Jack Irons

Opening the night was original & founding member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers Jack Irons. With nothing on stage but a drumset and a digital LED board, Jack spent 35 minutes playing along side a backing musical track while images danced on the screens behind him. Showcasing multiple styles, and genres, his set was a trip through music as heard by a drummer.

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue

Sparing no time, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue hit the stage running. This six piece ensemble played as though there was no tomorrow. In styles reminiscent of a classic New Orleans Bourbon Street band, this group performed like they were jamming on a street corner instead of playing to a sold out arena. Mixing blues, jazz, and rock and roll all into one, this set the tone for headliners Red Hot Chili Peppers to take the stage.

Red Hot Chili Peppers

Taking the stage one by one adding to a jam session, the Red Hot Chili Peppers opened their sold out Detroit show like they were practicing in a garage. From the jam session, they wasted no time going right in to hit song “Can’t Stop.” A very simplistic stage setup, only amps and the drumset were visible in front of a moving LED light wall. Hanging from the rafters were hundreds of tube lights that portrayed a variety of designs, moving in multiple directions, and changing colors depending on the song.

Lead singer Anthony Kiedis ran the stage and didn’t let the injury slow him down, sporting a walking boot on his left leg. He’d walk side stage at times to allow fellow band members to jam between songs. The Red Hot Chili Peppers played through a career spanning 20 song set that included new hits like “Dark Necessities” and “Go Robot,” as well as fan favorites “Suck My Kiss” “Under The Bridge” and city named “Detroit.” Including a 3 song encore and ending the evening with “Give It Away.”

With only 11 stops down on the tour, there is still plenty of time to catch them if you can get your hands on tickets. Most dates are already sold out, or are close to being.
