For the past 23 years, Chicago’s Double Door has been an iconic fixture in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood. The club’s run came to an end today, as they were evicted from their 1572 N. Milwaukee Ave. premises and the locks changed. According to DNAinfo, it’s the result of a legal battle between co-owner Sean Mulroney and the club’s landlord, Brian Strauss, that was initiated back in November of 2015. The club had been told to leave by the end of last year, but was told by a judge that they could stay past then as they worked through an appeal as long as they paid $26,000/month in rent. According to Strauss’ lawyer, Mulroney missed multiple deadlines to post a portion of the a $468,000 appeal bond, as well as use and occupancy fees for January and February.

There’s no immediate word on what’s going to happen to the shows already booked there, which include Lordi, The Number Twelve Looks Like You and Despised Icon. The owners had been talking about moving to Logan Square. The 473-capacity club had hosted bands including Ghost, Corrosion of Conformity, Refused and Helmet in recent years, and even appeared in the film High Fidelity. It’s a bummer for Chicago music fans, and hopefully things will work out with the new venue.
