If there’s one band that’s defined modern hardcore for the last 20 years, it’d have to be Converge. And if there’s one album of theirs that’s definitive, it’s their 2001 album Jane Doe. Released one week before September 11th, it separated them from their earlier word that, while solid metalcore, lacked the dynamics, lyrical depth and overall sound of their fourth album. Last year, the band played the Roadburn Festival, and they played their landmark album live to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the album. It’s just been announced that Jane Live, a recording of that April 14th show, will be available on February 24th on Deathwish Records. Guitarist Kurt Ballou mixed the recording, and it was mastered by Audiosiege’s Brad Boatright. You can hear the title track, which Nerdist premeired, below.
And if there’s one thing that’s as iconic as Jane Doe‘s music, it’s the album cover. Jacob Bannon’s beautiful portrait of a woman is one of the most visually striking album covers in heavy music. The album cover has been tweaked for the reissues. The above version, by Ashley Rose Couture, will adorn the CD version of the album, but there will be five different vinyl versions, with Florian Bertmer, John Baizley, Randy Ortiz, and Thomas Hooper putting their mark on the cover, as well as Couture’s.
