Prog snobs rejoice- Dream Theater is writing a book! It’s based on their latest album, The Astonishing, about a dystopian society where music is used as a weapon against a domineering government. In an interview with TeamRock, the band’s keyboardist Jordan Rudess shared that it isn’t actually any of the band itself doing the writing. They’ve partnered with Peter Orullian, an avid fantasy writer. The book will be published through Vault Books.
Rudess also added that the novel will have new characters not mentioned on the record, as well as subplots, and will answer some fan questions about the universe. The book is going to be a limited edition product, featuring previously unheard audio not used by Dream Theater while making The Astonishing.
The idea of transforming the album isn’t new- just last week the band’s guitarist John Petrucci said he’s love to see the album become a musical. The Astonishing novel is expected to be published in early 2017, and it won’t be cheap, at $75, but if that doesn’t give you sticker shock, you can pre-order it here.
