It’s not always that often that new venues open, particularly in New York City. In fact, between Roseland (on a big scale) and The Acheron, Trash Bar and Grand Victory (on a smaller scale), we seem to be losing venues quicker than gaining them. However, the Coney Island Amphitheater opened in late June, and appears to be off to a pretty solid start. Volbeat and Killswitch Engage chose the new venue to kick off their monthlong tour, and it was a resounding success. A hometown show of sorts for Volbeat guitarist Rob Caggiano and Killswitch Engage singer Jesse Leach, who lives here now, it even had a special guest appearance, as Misfits’ Jerry Only joined Volbeat, a band that was certainly influenced by him, for a cover of his band’s “Angelfuck.” Metal Insider contributing photographer Melinda Oswandel was on hand to shoot the proceedings.
