If you think “AV Club Undercover,” the first band that likely comes to mind is GWAR. For the last few years, they’ve run away with the series, in which a band covers another band from a list of songs. They got their start with a Kansas cover, then Billy Ocean, and last year, turned Jim Carroll band’s “People Who Died” into a tribute to Oderus Urungus. This year, they took on Cyndi Lauper’s “Shebop.” But it turns out that even though they already participated, GWAR isn’t done with the series yet. This week was the last installment for the year, and found sensitive singer-songwriter Jim Sam Beam, otherwise known as Iron & Wine, covering GWAR’s “Sick of You.”
Beam, perhaps best known for his equally unplugged and earnest cover of The Postal Service’s “Such Great Heights,” takes the song and makes it his own, which is to say the fun punk attitude of the original (above) is gone, but you can clearly hear Oderus’ lyrics. We’re not going to give away the ending, mainly because there are several that were filmed. However, it’s not giving away too much to say that Beam’s performance is watched by more than just AV Club staffers. You can head over to The AV Club to see it.
