Metal By Numbers is a weekly column in which we look at the top metal sellers and debuts of the week.
The top 10 this week looks a lot like last week except with Stone Temple Pilots’ first album in almost a decade coming in at #2. With the #1 album having sold only 63,000, it was definitely a light sales week, some of which can be chalked up to the holiday weekend. On the metal end of the spectrum, Soulfly debut at #72 with their latest Omen selling an impressive 6,100 copies. Far, Hank III (in country mode this time), and Georgia’s own Black Tusk round out the top metallic debuts of the week.
Notable Debuts:
Stone Temple Pilots, Stone Temple Pilots (Atlantic) #2, 62,000 sold
While it’s not really metal, at least it’s rock, and it fell just short of #1.
Soulfly, Omen, (Roadrunner) #72, 6,100 sold
Their sixth album to debut on the top 200, and a great start for Max
Hank Williams III, Rebel Within, (Curb) #19, 17,000 sold
He’s a little bit country, he’s a little bit rock ‘n roll. This is no Assjack, which might be why it had such a solid debut.
Far, At Night We Live, (Vagrant) 1,900 sold
Solid debut for the first Far album in 12 years.
Black Tusk, Taste the Sin, (Relapse) 625 sold
The Savannah metal scene keeps on growing. If Black Tusk had a record sale for every band in the scene… oh wait, it looks like they do!
Notable Sales:
Godsmack, Oracle (Universal) #11, 22,000 sold
At just over 209,000 four weeks after debuting, they’ve officially gotten to where IV debuted in its first week.
AC/DC, AC/DC: Iron Man 2 (Columbia) #13 21,000 sold
Down 34% but still selling 20,000 records a week.
As I Lay Dying, The Powerless Rise (Metal Blade) #60, 7,300, copies
Three weeks in, they powerlessly fall of 44% but are close to selling 60,000.
Deftones, Diamond Eyes (Reprise) #31 10,300 sold
105,000 sold to date.
Bullet For My Valentine, Fever (Jive) #41, 10,000 sold
50 records short of 130,000, again not bad for five weeks.
Slash, Slash (Dick Hayd) #51, 8,100 sold
The album takes another 15% jump up, and sells over 132,000, impressive but still far fewer than the old lead singer of Velvet Revolver.
Five Finger Death Punch, War Is The Answer (Prospect Park) #103 4,700 sold
Apparently war is the answer as they get closer to 250,000 sold.
Sevendust, Cold Day Memory (7 Bros.) #166 3,000 sold
50,000 sold, or about 1/10th of what their debut album did.
Motley Crue, Greatest Hits (Motley Records) #167, 3,000 sold
Zach’s wishful thinking from 4/14’s Metal By Numbers hasn’t worked that well.
Coheed and Cambria, Year Of The Black Rainbow (Columbia) #155 3,200 sold
They hang on for another week and actually increase 6%.
Alice In Chains, Black Gives Way To Blue (Virgin) #181 2,700 sold
35 weeks on the charts and they increase by 3%. Looks like Black Gives Way to Blue will give way to gold!
Drowning Pool, Drowning Pool (Eleven-Seven) #193 2,500 sold
They decrease by 4% and wade into the shallow end of the top 200.
Slipknot, All Hope Is Gone (Roadrunner) #172 2,900 sold
As expected, they increase 26% this week, and are about 50,000 short of platinum certification.
We Came As Romans, To Plant A Seed (Equal Vision) 850 sold
They’ve reaped almost 30,000 of what they’ve sown.
War of Ages, Eternal (Facedown) 570 sold
Still nothing to say other than they decrease 20%.
Brian Posehn, Fart and Wiener Jokes (Relapse) 520 sold
As a former Relapse intern, it’s good knowing all the hours I spent packing promo material didn’t go to waste. I think.
Periphery, Periphery (Sumerian) 500 sold
Periphery Thrash and Burn enough to sell just over 8,000.
John 5, Art of Malice (Rocket Science) 450 sold
Three weeks in Mr. 5 falls 14% and a few positions in the charts.
Seasons After, Through Tomorrow (Dirtbag) 440 albums
Another weeks push and these guys will be over the 10,000 mark.
Veil of Maya, ID (Sumerian 400 sold
Bested by label mates Periphery, they decrease 24%.
