GWAR have done a lot in their long and storied career, but one of their finest achievements is breaking the A.V. Club’s “Undercover” series. The series, which finds bands covering songs from a list, had no idea what hit it when they first had the band on a few years back to cover Kansas’ “Carry On Wayward Son.” It was easily the most popular cover of the year, so much so that they’ve had them back every year since. Covering Billy Ocean, and a surprisingly touching cover of The Jim Carroll band’s “People Who Died” that turned into a tribute to Oderus Urungus. Each of their subsequent appearances have been that year’s most popular as voted by AV club readers. The series has also likely been some peoples’ first exposure to GWAR outside of Empire Records, so it’s helped keep them in the spotlight outside of the touring juggernaut they are. It looks like they might do that again with their cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “She Bop.” And like last year, they don’t just stick to the song they’re covering.
