Wondering what the top music of 2017 streamed on Spotify was? Spoiler alert: Ed Sheeran, followed closely by “Despacito.” Not surprising or all that interesting, eh? Spotify have released their Global Year In Music charts, and while there are a lot of the usual suspects in terms of artists and pop songs, things get pretty interesting in the “Emerging 2017 Genres” list, specifically the top two emerging genres. The top is “Melodic Power Metal,” followed by “Chaotic Black Metal.” This goes hand in hand with the data from a few years ago that found that out of all the listeners to Spotify, metal fans are the most loyal listeners.
There’s really only one other place on the charts that were included in the survey where rock/metal bands show up, and that’s the “Most Streamed Groups” list, where Linkin Park pop up at #4. However, “Heavy” was certainly more of a pop song than a rock one, and the sad death of Chester Bennington led to the band being streamed even more than they probably would have been normally. If you want to find out what you listened to the most on Spotify, you can head to 2017wrapped.com, where it gives you a quiz of what you listened to the most this year, then gives you your actual top five artists songs and genres, and presents you with a playlist.
