“The era of metal has begun, and metal shall prevail for we know what they have done. Five legends of our realm have fought to follow the path of their dark musings, but they did not know what they had summoned, Pentakill. To these creatures there is but one thing left to do… Heavy metal!” – The Prophecy

Three years have passed since the release of their debut album, but the fictional band Pentakill is back with some very real heavy metal music. Yesterday the band released their very first music video for the track “Mortal Reminder,” showing the band in action for the first time outside of the video game itself, making it the third single off of their upcoming album Pentakill II: Grasp of the Undying. Unfortunately the release date has not be announced yet, but it’s hard to imagine that it is too far off at this point. *UPDATE* Sometime in the relatively short time gap between when I originally wrote this and when it posted, the full album was released. I suppose they weren’t kidding when they said “coming soon.”

Grasp of the Undying was recorded in the catacombs of the Shadow Isles, and engineered and produced by Riot Games in Los Angeles, CA and London, UK.  It was also mixed and mastered by Jacob Hansen (Volbeat, Circus Maximus, Anubis Gate, etc.).

For those who are not familiar with them, Pentakill is a band that appears in the massively popular video game League of Legends. The game is a multiplayer online battle area (MOBA), and is currently one of the most popular E-Sports in the world, with events pulling tens of thousands of fans. The band became almost a recurring joke through the series, but in 2014 they released the album Smite and Ignite under the name, and even cracked the Billboard Top 40 (although does it really count if you give it out free?). You can read more about the band and that album here, covering them was actually one of the very first articles that I ever wrote for Metal Insider.

This being the band’s first music video, it’s clear that they wanted to send a message to show what they were capable of. The video is an entirely CGI production depicting all five of the original members of the band gathering for a performance over Bandle City, a fictional town in the LoL universe best known for it’s food, art, and Yordle population. As the group comes together, through various dark and ominous circumstances, the landscape warps around them and show begins. The band plays, converting all of the local population into headbanging metalheads, and just as the song is finishing up another figure that has been soaring the skies during the show swoops down and lands on stage. This is the introduction of the in-game character Kayle into the band, who recently got her own Pentakill skin. Kayle is a female angel wielding a combination greatsword/microphone. Noora Louhimo of Battle Beast has lent her voice to the warrior angel, a fitting choice if I do say so myself.

Now that I think of it, Kayle’s new skin does look kind of familiar…

Pentakill has released three singles from the album. “The Bloodthirster” and “Mortal Reminder,” which both feature Jørn Lande on vocals, and “Tear of the Goddess” which Noora sings on. The best part, other than the awesome music video below, is that you can download the entire album for free directly from the League of Legends website!
