Killswitch Engage vocalist Jesse Leach is a pretty enlightened dude. He’s a very positive person, and if you’ve seen him DJ in New York City, he mixes up the punk and metal he plays with ska and reggae. He also apparently has a soft spot for ’90s shoegaze/altpop as well. For his solo project, AliKen, he’s done a lo-fi reggaefied version of Mazzy Star’s 1993 hit, “Fade Into You.” In keeping with the DIY ethic of AliKen, he recorded the song on Garage Band in his bedroom and edited the video himself as well. Here’s what he has to say about the cover:
This song was originally done by a great band called “Mazzy Star.” This song is easily one of my favorites so I had to pay tribute as well as make it my own with this reggae version. I shot all the footage myself and edited it as well. The song was recorded in my bedroom with Garageband so it is Lo-Fi D.I.Y. I had such a fun time making this video out in a beautiful secluded spot I enjoy going to to write and reflect. I hope you enjoy it! More to come! This song is available on my SoundCloud page!
If you’re expecting metal, you’ve definitely come to the wrong place, and while the original song is unfuckwithable, Leach does a pretty solid job of interpreting it. Here’s the original, for sake of comparison:
