callofthemastodonWe said we were looking forward to a Mastodon release later this year, and the band’s former label, Relapse, has struck first. They’re re-releasing the band’s compilation, Call of the Mastodon, on limited edition vinyl on February 18. Initially released by the label after they’d made the jump to Reprise, Call of the Mastodon was comprised of the band’s first EP, Lifesblood, as well as three songs from the “Slick Leg” 7″ released in 2000. Also, the album’s title track appeared on the band’s demo, and featured vocals by the band’s previous vocalist Eric Saner.

Basically, if you’re a completist and have the other band’s albums on vinyl, you’ll want this. From the Paul Romano artwork to the raw heaviness of the band’s initial output, this definitely captures the band in their early stages on the verge of something they’d realize with their debut full length in 2002. The vinyl will also include a digital download of the album and will be pressed on three color variations, including red, clear with gold and blue splatter, and blue and gold merge. You can pre-order it here, and check out what the vinyl looks like via the below video.
