Crosses ††† Rocks Nashville, TN: review and photos 1/11/14

crossesCrosses †††, featuring the mighty Chino Moreno of Deftones, Shaun Lopez of Far, and Chuck Doom, are currently on a 1-week mini tour, with just two more dates now remaining today and tomorrow.  Luckily (at least for me) the band chose Nashville as one of the four stops, playing before a packed, nearly sold-out crowd of 800+ fans at the Cannery Ballroom.

After a set from the opening act, Dawn Golden, Crosses ††† gradually took to the stage, with frontman Chino Moreno greeted by exuberant cheers of “Chino! Chino!” from the crowd.  The band wasted little time launching into their set, kicking things off with their track “Thholyghst” (The Holy Ghost) off of their first release, EP †.  Their set continued and featured a few more songs from EP †, and all of the tracks off of 2012’s predictably titled, EP ††.   From what I’d been hearing before they went on, while there were definitely some big fans of the band present, a lot of those in the audience were either slightly familiar with Crosses ††† or had never heard their music before.  After just a few songs however, it was clear that the crowd, if not fans already, had been easily conver †ed over (see wha† I did †here? If only I could map †ha† †o my keyboard…..).  Since I’m one of those converts, with only a little background in the band, let me just say that Chino sounded AMAZING, and looked like he was having a blast onstage.

Because this tour happened before their upcoming self-titled release, which is due out February 11th on Sumerian Records, fans weren’t able to hear a much of the brand new material, but Crosses ††† did play the one song that had already been released last year, “Bitches Brew”.  If that song is any gauge for what to expect from the full length that is due out next month, the new album will surely please fans and win new ones over as well.  And if Chino and the guys in Crosses ††† keep this up, they may find themselves having to do a much more substantial, lengthier tour.  As it is now they’ve only played a handful of shows together as a band (a local radio DJ hosting the show stated that the Nashville show was only their 10th or 11th show as a band), which is crazy to think about, and made this night even more of a treat.  If you can’t make their show on Monday, January 13th in Pontiac, MI, or on Tuesday, January 14th in Chicago, IL, you can still see them this year (if you’re really dedicated) as they were just announced to be part of the lineup for the 2014 Coachella Festival in Indio, CA!
