Les Binks, former drummer for Judas Priest, has passed away. Born in 1951, Binks was 73 at the time of his death. While he reportedly died on March 15, the news of his passing was not publicly confirmed until Monday evening (14).
Binks performed with Judas Priest from 1977 to 1979, contributing to Stained Class, Killing Machine (also known as Hell Bent for Leather), and the live album Unleashed in the East. His precise and dynamic drumming helped shape the band’s signature sound, but Dave Holland later replaced him.
In 2022, Binks was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame alongside Judas Priest via the Award for Musical Excellence. He reunited with the band for a three-song set at the induction ceremony, his first time performing with them in more than four decades.
Judas Priest paid tribute on social media, stating:
“We are deeply saddened about the passing of Les and send our love to his family, friends and fans.
The acclaimed drumming he provided was first class – demonstrating his unique techniques, flair, style and precision. Thank you Les – your acclaim will live on.”
Beyond his time with Judas Priest, Binks worked with numerous artists throughout his career, both on stage and in the studio. Our thoughts are with Binks’ family and friends during this difficult time.
