Fans of Deftones won’t have to wait too long for a new album. In a recent interview with NBC 7 San Diego about the band’s recent Dia de los Deftones festival, frontman Chino Moreno mentioned that they have been slowly working on a new album that could be coming out as soon as next year.
Moreno said in the interview, making it clear that the band is taking their time to get things just right:
“We’ve been working on our record for about a year now. We’re not doing that thing where we go in and lock ourselves in a room until it’s done; we are kind of enjoying our time making it. It’s been a cool process, we get together, we work for a couple weeks, whether that’s just making noise and coming up with ideas and then everybody just goes home and comes back to work on ’em a little bit more. So, we’ve been doing that for a little over a year or so.”
According to Moreno, much of the album is already recorded.
“This summer, we actually went into the studio and recorded an album’s worth of music. So, the music was pretty much done and the last few months have sort of just been working on the lyrics and the melodies and the singing parts. So that’s pretty much where we’re at right now.”
With the record being so close to finished, Moreno says fans could see it hit shelves as soon as early 2020.
“I’m hoping that it’ll be earlier on in the year, but I feel like once I give a definitive answer or speculate exactly when, I feel like we’ll be held to it [laughs] so I kind of want to continue on. Of course, it’ll be out next year, hopefully earlier than later.”
The biggest focus, though, is on the LP’s quality.
“Our biggest thing is making sure that it’s good. We’ll be performing it, once it’s out, for the next two or three years, so we want to be sure it’s the best it can be and want to make everyone happy — including ourselves.”
Deftones released their latest effort, Gore, in 2016. The new album will be the band’s ninth.
On Saturday (2nd), Deftones held their second-annual Dia de los Deftones festival at PetCo Park in San Diego, CA. The band was joined by Chvrches, Gojira, Megan Thee Stallion, JPEGMAFIA, Hum, Youthcode and Brutus. Merch from the festival will be available on the band’s website through Friday.
While Deftones do not have any more shows scheduled for 2019, they have a couple of festival dates lined up for next year. Those include sets at Germany’s Rock Am Ring and Rock in Park festivals June 5-7 and The UK’s Download Festival June 12-14.
