A pelican is a flightless bird, but you wouldn’t know that from listening to the soaring melodies of “Immutable Dusk,” the first taste of their forthcoming album, Forever Becoming. It’s been four years since their last full length (2009’s What We All Come to Need), and over a year since their last EP, 2012’s Ataraxia/Taraxis. But while last year’s EP only ran about 17 minutes, this song is nearly half as long, clocking in at over seven minutes. One thing the instrumental quartet excel at are dynamics, and while it starts out riffy and heavy, the middle of the song subsides a bit until the crushing riffs return for the final two and a half minutes of the song.
Forever Becoming will be released on Southern Lord on October 15.
