And 2012 gets off to a refreshingly strange start with Primal Rock Rebellion. Iron Maiden guitarist Adrian Smith has formed a new project with former SikTh frontman Mikee Goodman. “I See Lights” is the first single off the project’s self-titled album, which will be released on February 27th worldwide via Spinefarm. For those who aren’t aware of the criminally underrated SikTh, the band released two albums last decade before breaking up. Their sound was pretty uncategorizable, but they’re seen as a precursor to the djent movement, and were a hybrid of progressive and experimental metal.
As for “I See Lights,” it definitely sounds a little closer to SikTh than it does Maiden, and fans of Killing Joke will likely be interested as well. Smith plays guitar and bass on the album, with SikTh drummer Dan “Loorde” “Foorde on drums. Bat For Lashes’ Abl Fry also contributed to the album.
“It was interesting doing this album with Mikee not least because we have quite different influences,” Smith said in a statement. “I was really pleased with the way it turned out. It has a really fresh feel to it.”
“This album takes you on a really deep and colorful journey, lyrically and musically,” Goodman adds. “Adrian and I were both very open to experimenting with each others’ musical styles and influences, which we feel created something new and exciting.”
