So far, music and information from the Game of Thrones mixtape, “Catch the Throne Vol. 2,” has been trickling out slowly. We’ve heard snippets of songs from Killswitch Engage, then Anthrax, and on Friday, word officially came out that Mastodon would be on it as well. Monday, a brief snippet of their contribution was released, and today the whole track, “White Walker,” became the first track to be fully released from the mixtape, which will be out this coming Tuesday in advance of the fifth season of Game of Thrones.
Anchored by Brann Dailor’s vocals, it’s easily the most melodic song the band have released.Featuring samples of music from last season of the hit HBO drama, sparse toms and acoustic guitar drive the song forward, with vocal harmonies, and eventually, a blinding solo from Brent Hinds comes in. If this is one of the songs that the band planned on doing on their companion EP to Once More ‘Round the Sun, we’re really excited to see it. And if you’re looking for Mastodon to get heavy, you’ve picked the wrong song.
In other news, like the Grammys, HBO initially forgot how to spell “Mastodon.” It appeared as “mastadon” on the initial SoundCloud stream (it’s since been fixed).
