Eddie Van Halen didn’t really do himself any favors in the Chuck Klosterman-written Billboard piece a few weeks back. He had a lot of vitriol for his former (and current) bandmates, he said he didn’t listen to any popular music, and the last album he bought was Peter Gabriel’s 186 album So. Fortunately for him, he’s still got a ton of talent, which was on display when Van Halen kicked off their Summer tour last night in Seattle. Eddie’s nine-minute solo covered all the bases (of course “Eruption” was in there, as was “Cathedral”), but he’s still one of the best guitarists out there, as the solo shows. In addition to that, the show featured some songs that hadn’t been played since as far back as 1978. Here’s the set list:

“Light Up the Sky” (last played live in 1980)
“Runnin’ With the Devil”
“Romeo Delight”
“Everybody Wants Some!!”
“Drop Dead Legs” (live debut)
“Feel Your Love Tonight” (last played live in 1998)
“Somebody Get Me a Doctor”
“She’s the Woman”
“China Town”
“I’ll Wait”
Drum Solo
“Little Guitars”
“Dance the Night Away”
“Beautiful Girls”
“Women in Love”
“Hot for Teacher”
“In a Simple Rhyme / Growth” (last played live in 1978)
“Dirty Movies” (live debut)
“Ice Cream Man”
“Unchained”
“Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love”
Guitar Solo
“You Really Got Me”
“Panama”
“Jump”
