Asking Alexandria are no strangers to covers. They did some pretty spot-on takes of their hair metal idols Skid Row on their “Life Gone Wild” EP. Now they’ve gone from the ’80s to the ’90s, covering Nine Inch Nails’ “Closer.” With Fearless Records’ forthcoming comp Punk Goes 90s Vol. 2 coming out on April 1, Asking Alexandria have put their cover up on Spotify. It starts out innocently enough, sounding pretty much like a tribute to the original, as it was likely intended. A few minutes in though, it turns into overwrought hardcore/screamo, turning Trent Reznor’s understated delivery of the chorus into a demand, taking the sensuality of the song and making it sound more rapey than was originally intended. If you’re an Asking Alexandria fan, you’re probably already on board with this. If you’re a Nine Inch Nails fan, however, this won’t bring you any closer to god.
