Century Media has been an independent label since 1988, but according to some rumors, the label may soon be acquired by one of the big three major labels. Sony is believed to be in the lead, and founder Robert Kampf would continue to be responsible for the day-to-day management. Contacted by Blabbermouth, who broke the story, Kampf didn’t publicly comment on the potential sale, but “did confirm his interest in a major-label acquisition in order to give Century Media a stronger footing at a time of diminishing worldwide sales of sound recordings,” they say.
Kampf said that last year was the label’s strongest year, and having served as incubator for In This Moment (now on Atlantic) while putting out tastemaker albums like At the Gates’ At War With Reality and Watain’s The Wild Hunt and just recently, Napalm Death’s Apex Predator – Easy Meat. Shadows Fall and Lacuna Coil are some of the other popular and high-selling bands that have been on the label throughout it’s 27-year history. If this goes through, it’ll be pretty nuts to know that Devin Townsend is on a major. And maybe that shitty song he wrote will see the light of day!
