Paws, Pets & Metal is Metal Insider’s newest column on bands with pets, discovering who watches them on the road, and more. Get to know more about these metal furbabies. We caught up with Supermodel Taxidermy’s Shawn Maynard as he revealed his frenchton dogs listen to a lot of Slayer.

Tell us more about your pet(s) and their names?

I have two Frenchton dogs, One is a dark-brindle male. We call him Oderus Urungus, named after…you guessed it. The late David Brockie of GWAR, although my kids call him ‘Odie’ for short. The other one is still a puppy, and she happens to be the daughter of Oderus, her name is Mazy-Mae.

Have you ever taken your pet on tour?

Absolutely not, Mazy-Mae gets so much attention when we go out, I would be afraid of showing up late for sound check because of how many random people stop us to chat her up. I mean can you blame them? She is a cutie.

Who looks after your pet while on the road?

Grandma Linda always saves the day when the pups are in need of some extra love. The dogs like it too because of the non-stop treats when she’s around, you know how grandmas are…

What’s your pet’s favorite song or album?

I would have to go with South of Heaven, we listen to a lot of SLAYER in my house.

How did you introduce your pet to metal?

The right way! They are probably my most performed to the audience. If I get really into playing guitar and start headbanging a lot Oderus takes it as a sign of playtime and will start attacking my feet while running circles around me, I refer to it as ‘’the puppy pit.’’

What animal charity means most to you?

Our local SPCA. That shelter is not government-funded; it relies on its donations, and the coolest part about that place is it has been operating this way since I was a little kid. I’m proud of my hometown for that.
