Oort Cloud – Los Altos Hills, CA
Two words: Space Drone. This band is a stoned dream of experimental and cinematic soundscapes. Progressive, posty, doomy etc – they’ve got something to offer for anyone that loves to zone out. Their live performance put me in a trance. Beautiful guitar melodies and crushing riffs that weave around trippy organs and textural synths. Although most of what you can find online is instrumental, bassist Mikey Queen delivers sermon-esque spoken passages and abrasive shrieking in live settings. Definitely a band to keep on your radar.

Sister Rust – Los Angeles, CA & Orange County, CA
Featuring members of the math-core geniuses (and SoCal locals) in Seizures, it should come as no surprise that Sister Rust are equally awesome. While the former is more experimental and dizzying in their execution of complex riffage, Sister Rust takes that complexity and adds more of the infectious melody-based style of hardcore groove that gets glued to your brain seconds after the record’s over. And those breakdowns. Oh, those breakdowns. Their debut, Escapist, is a must listen for this year.
