There’s tons of metal festivals all over the country, from Chicago Open Air and Rock on the Range to the Maryland Death Fest and New England Metal and Hardcore Fests. We haven’t even mentioned the cruises, like 70,000 Tons of Metal and the Motorboat (R.I.P.). That doesn’t mean there isn’t room for new and interesting festivals, and yesterday, a new destination fest has been announced, Metal Maya.

As you might have guessed, this takes place in Mexico, at the Now Sapphire Riviera Cancun, in Puerto Morelos on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. From October 29th to November 2nd, Anthrax, Overkill, Superjoint, Death Angel, Otep and Metal Allegiance will be performing, with more guests to be announced. Fittingly, Jose Mangin will host the fest, and among the Metal Allegiance members performing will be Machine Head’s Phil Demmel, Megadeth’s David Ellefson, Gary Holt (Slayer/Exodus) and Mike Portnoy.

Anthrax’s Charlie Benante is a fan:

“I’ve been going down to Riviera Cancun for a few years now, and it’s one of my favorite places. And now, to go down there and play, and have some fun, and enjoy the weather?! This is going to be an awesome event! I’m really excited about it and I think that everyone’s going to have a great time. We’re all going to be at a place where the weather’s beautiful, the ocean’s there, the drinks are pouring, the metal is blasting, and your favorite bands are playing. Can’t wait to see you there!”

The timing of the event should make for some fun. Celebrations for both Halloween and Dia de los Muertos are planned, and if cruises aren’t your thing, then why not take in some metal at a resort and celebrate Halloween at the same time? Metal Maya is limited to 1,000 people, and you can reserve your spot now by going here.
