It’s 2018, and we’re kicking it off with a giveaway that’s looking not to the year ahead, but back to the glory days of thrash metal, the early ’80s. MetalRock Films is releasing part one of a two-part DVD, The Rise of L.A. Thrash Metal, on January 19th, and we have a copy to give away. The film, which was directed by Bob Nalbandian and narrated by Megadeth’s David Ellefson, takes a look at the fertile scene that gave way to bands like Megadeth, Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies, Dark Angel and Hirax. Members of Megadeth, Slayer, Testament, Anthrax, Armored Saint, Alice In Chains, Prong and more contribute to the documentary, offering insightful interviews about what it was like to be at the genesis of a movement that still thrives over 35 years later. Here’s what Nalbandian tells us about the documentary:
“‘The Rise of L.A. Thrash Metal’ is the third title of the Inside Metal documentary series. The reason we decided to do this third title on the ‘80s LA thrash metal scene is because we felt this scene was greatly neglected over the years, mainly due to the fact that the Los Angeles music scene in the ‘80s was dominated by Glam bands and the thrash bands were rarely talked about. In the early ‘80s the Los Angeles “thrash metal” (then called “speed metal”) scene was thriving with early formation of Metallica performing in the LA and Orange County clubs, followed by Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies, Megadeth, Dark Angel, Abattoir, Hirax and so many others. This film tells the true story, from the artists that literally created what is now known as “Thrash Metal.”
