Here we are, at that time of year when you start feeling warm and fuzzy about stuff. When you think of metalheads, warm and fuzzy, usually don’t come to mind. But surprise, surprise, the hard-hitting folks in the heavy metal scene have a softer side too. After spending over ten years in the industry, I’ve seen how metalheads and musicians can be downright awesome. Let me give you the lowdown on some of my favorite charities and musicians that prove rockstars have big hearts too.

First up, We’ve got the One More Light Fund, a powerful tribute to the enduring spirit of Chester Bennington. Established in his memory, this fund contributes to Chester’s cherished Music for Relief program. It aims to provide solar electricity kits to health clinics in remote areas that lack access to power. Additionally, it’s a beacon for mental health awareness through a partnership with 320 Changes Direction, spearheaded by TaLinda Bennington. Their joint mission seeks to revolutionize the conversation around mental health, providing essential resources and support for individuals and families in need. This initiative honors Chester’s musical legacy and embodies his unwavering commitment to uplifting communities and advocating for mental well-being. Now, onto the Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund. Losing Ronnie James Dio to stomach cancer in 2010 hit hard in the metal world. His widow, Wendy Dio (a personal favorite of mine in heavy metal), co-founded this fund. Besides funding cancer research, they’re all about educating people on preventing, detecting, and treating different types of cancer. In 2022, one of my favorite musicians, Mark Tremonti, did something pretty cool. He released a Frank Sinatra cover album with all the money going to the National Down Syndrome Society. Inspired by his daughter Stella, it kicked off his Take A Chance For Charity initiative, urging other big shots to give back. He kept the kindness flowing with a holiday album and shows supporting the NDSS. Who said metalheads don’t have a soft side? Let’s give a nod to an individual doing good – George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher from Cannibal Corpse. This guy isn’t just a beast at playing brutal riffs; he’s also a claw machine champ with a heart of gold. George spends time grabbing toys from those claw machines to bring some joy to kids in local hospitals. Now, that’s the kind of stuff that makes a difference.

And don’t forget about Sweet Relief Musicians. They’re there for musicians who hit a rough patch. Because, let’s face it, even rock stars need a hand sometimes. Sweet Relief gives a financial boost to musicians and industry workers dealing with illness, disability, or just the challenges that come with age. Be sure to visit https://www.sweetrelief.org/ for more information.

Last on my list is Backline, a nonprofit that’s pretty special to me. Beyond the leather jackets and long hair, mental health is a big deal in the music biz. Backline hooks up industry folks and their families with mental health resources. It’s a favorite because it keeps it real, offering everything from counseling to online support groups. So, in the big symphony of metal, it’s not just about the head-banging tunes; there’s also a sweet harmony of kindness and community service. These personal favorites show that in the world of metal, it’s not just about the music; it’s about making a real difference in people’s lives.

Editor’s added pick: Metallica gives back to the community in more ways than one. Fans have volunteered at food banks to beach clean up before seeing them perform live with All Within My Hands Foundation, which you can learn more here
