Let’s be honest, instrumental prog rock is a required taste. Yet there’s something irresistible about it when done right. Enter Earthside, a young band that excels at crafting cinematic prog. That’s why we’re excited to premiere “The Closest I’ve Come”, a song off their soon to be released debut A Dream In Static.
Although they hail from New Haven, CT, Earthside recorded their debut album in Stockholm, Sweden with producer and mix engineer David Castillo (Opeth, Katatonia, Bloodbath) with additional mastering done Jens Bogren (Opeth, Soilwork, The Ocean). That would partly explain how the band was able to capture Opeth and Katatonia’s proggy epicness in the studio so well. The band also shared the following with us about the inspiration behind “The Closest I’ve Come”:
“‘The Closest I’ve Come’ was a coming of age song for us. It was the first piece of music we wrote for the record, and in a very personal way it represents our journey, both as musicians and people, from adolescence to maturity. This track defined us on a core level and set the bar for our future output.
It also tells our story through an instrumental medium—the feeling of pushing oneself and striving for something greater, but also longing to reach the point of fulfillment—which rarely happens in the creative process!”
