Mastodon’s video for “The Motherload” that debuted earlier this week did everything it was supposed to do. It was, first of all, an interesting video for the song that was shot amazingly well. It was also provocative – maybe too provocative, due to the fact that there were a number of dancers in it that twerked. Some called it misogynistic. Others, including drummer Brann Dailor and a dancer in the video, defended it, saying that it was not just a parody of ’90s alternative or R&B videos, but an homage to the Atlanta bounce scene (which is what twerking was called B.M., or Before Miley). Now Mastodon appear to be addressing the controversy by coming out with a limited edition Halloween shirt.
The shirt, which we saw on guitar tech (and Troy Sanders’ brother) Darren Sanders’ Facebook page, features a twerking witch riding a broom with a strategically-place pumpkin with the caption”Happy Halloween Haters.” While the shirt isn’t available online yet, Sanders says in the comments thread that the shirt will be “hittin’ the streets soon.” In the meantime, you can still pick up a pair of Asstodon shorts.
