System of a Down hasn’t exactly been coming up with new material recently, however their drummer John Dolmayan is raising money for his covers project titled These Grey Men. You wouldn’t necessarily expect a member of a multi-platinum band to need to crowd-fund, but John explains that the project is being developed without a record company. According to Dolmayan, the approximate cost for recording, equipment, and touring is about $75,000, which is a hefty price. However, the band is not campaigning for the full amount, instead using Kickstarter to obtain about $55,000 of it.
The band has put up their video on kickstarter.com and they have already raised over $10,000 of their final goal, with 58 days to go. The video features Dolmayan and James Hazely talking about the project. The album will cover a wide variety of artists including Radiohead, Outkast and David Bowie. The project could go in many different directions, but it will definitely be geared towards rock. If you’re interested in being a part of Dolmayan’s project, head over to their Kickstarter page to donate.
