A documentary following a burgeouning hardcore scene in South Africa’sn Angola opened this week in New York City. The film’s run at the DOC NYC Film Festival began November 14 and continues through the 21st at the IFC Center and SVA theater.
Death Metal Angola tells the story of Sonia Ferreira, a war survivor of the Angola region with a passion for death metal who also was a caretaker of 55 orphans. In an attempt at bringing together music lovers and a country devastated by war, she joins forces with her partner, death metal guitarist Wilker Flores. Together they launch Angola’s first-ever national rock concert. The movie tells the story of the performances while also giving a glimpse at the tragedy Angola experienced. Members of an underground Angolan hardcore scene from different provinces come together to perform in destructed spaces, to provide hope to a people coming together for music.
